The 7 Pillars and How to Style it Yourself

The après ski aesthetic has officially taken the crown as this season's top old money style, dethroning the sultry mob wife and the demure Ralph Lauren woman. And honestly, it makes sense, our culture has been obsessed with old-money vibes lately, craving the elegance, quiet luxury, and implied wealth of a bygone era. Après-ski takes that energy and layers it (literally) with a modern, functional twist.

You can channel this aesthetic in your own way by incorporating retro elements, chunky knitwear, puffers, fur (of course), statement accessories, strong boot game, and monochromatic moments. And let’s not forget the importance of layering, which makes this trend as practical as it is stylish. Thermal tops under vests, statement socks peeking out from boots, or mixing textures like fleece, wool, and fur give depth and warmth to the look. Après-ski is all about merging functionality with indulgent, old-money vibes.

Retro Vibes

A nod to vintage ski wear with bold stripes, color blocking, and fun 80s and 90s-inspired graphics is one of the defining elements of the current après-ski trend. Love her or hate her, Kimberly's retro Skims ads were iconic. They channeled the perfect mix of nostalgia and modern glamour, helping to usher in this retro vibe. The bold pops of color and streamlined, figure-hugging silhouettes in those ads paid homage to vintage ski aesthetics while making them feel fresh and relevant for today.

Chunky Knitwear

Think oversized sweaters, cozy turtlenecks, and timeless cable-knit cardigans (the chunkier, the better.) Bonus points if they’re in soft neutrals or classic patterns like Fair Isle. For a modern twist I love the mountain range design, adding a nod to the scenery. These pieces are equal parts functional and fashionable, making them staples for nailing the après-ski vibe and staying warm.

Puffer Everything

From cropped puffer jackets, to long quilted coats, to adorable puffed vests they're an easy staple of the aesthetic. This is an element that you probably don't have to spend any money to incorporate. Take a puffer you already have and dress it up by pairing it with a black pant, some oversized sunglasses, and a wide head bland to make it sleek homage to Audrey Hepburn's elegant ski style. Or, make it playful with a bold monochromatic print for both your jacket and pants and pair it with some colored tint ski goggles.

Fur Accents

This right here is the crown jewel of the après-ski style: fur everything. Fur-lined hoods, plush collars, cozy gloves, or even full-on faux fur coats, everywhere you look, fur is stealing the show. It's the combination glamour and function that make it so appealing. I think these 'old money' styles have been so popular lately because as a culture we miss the elegance and decadence of fashion from the past. Whether it’s a subtle fur trim or an over-the-top statement piece, this element defines the vibe, making you look effortlessly chic while keeping you warm and toasty.

Statement Accessories

Because you can go a little over the top with après-ski style, this is the perfect time to lean into statement accessories. Oversized sunglasses with retro frames, colorful ski goggles, shearling and fur-lined headbands or hats, and chunky oversized scarves are all essential players. Whether you’re carving through fresh powder on the slopes or sipping hot toddies by the fire at the lodge, these accessories let you have fun while adding personality to your look and staying warm.

Boot Game

It’s all about the boots, and it matters what you pair them with because let’s be real, most of us grew up in oversized snow pants or maybe our brother’s hand-me-down Carhartts. Functional? Sure. Fashionable? Not exactly. These days, the game has changed, and a statement boot paired with a sleek, fitted ski pant or leggings. It lets you show off the boots while balancing out a heavier jacket or coat on top.

Moon boots, boots trimmed with fur, sleek leather hiking boots, or classic Sorels are all perfect choices. They’re waterproof, warm, and stylish enough to take you seamlessly from the slopes to the lodge. And let’s not forget, this doesn’t have to mean dropping big bucks. Check your mom’s closet  (Speaking from experience) those vintage Sorel snow boots might just be waiting for their comeback moment.

Monochromatic Looks

Monochromatic suits are one of the funnest ways to embrace après-ski style. Shimmering silvers, icy whites, or sleek black-on-black outfits create that luxe, snow-ready feel. Whether it’s a one-piece ski suit or separates, these looks give off major vintage ski ad vibes. You can go for a fitted silhouette or opt for a puffer style, either way, you’re channeling alpine chic no matter where you really are.
