From Monochromatic Wool Ensembles to Custom Couture Gowns—the Ladies Showed Up
By JENNY SMITH MATTFELDT Published January 22, 2025

A lot happened at the January 2025 presidential inauguration, but one of the most talked-about moments? The fashion. The women of the Trump family, along with the effortlessly chic Usha Vance, gave us plenty to admire. From monochromatic wool ensembles to custom couture gowns, it was a style showcase that lasted all week.
Melania
Her style is created in part by Hervé Pierre, who has emphasized that while he offers guidance, the final decisions are entirely hers. In a recent interview with Vogue, he remarked, “Who, as a free woman, is going to be told what to wear? It’s a conversation, a collaboration.” This collaborative approach was evident at the inauguration, where her mood—very somber—was mirrored in the structure of her outfits.
Ivanka
The picture of elegance. Her custom Givenchy gown paid homage to the dress originally created for Audrey Hepburn in 1954. Ivanka expressed how deeply honored she was by the inspiration, noting that Hepburn is one of her major style icons. Her fully beaded pearl gown for the Candlelight Dinner was created by Oscar de la Renta and was a fan favorite from the week.
Lara
What I loved most about all these looks was the undeniable sophistication. Of course, being a political event, it wasn’t exactly a casual affair, but the fashion was just so effortlessly classy. Lara Trump’s style, in particular, always stands out to me because she brings a bit more edge to her looks. She frequently wears designs by Oscar Garcia-Lopez, a Cuban-American designer who won the first season of Project Runway: Under the Gunn. He created her breathtaking strapless red finale gown, featuring a dramatic cascading ruffle down the back, elegance with a touch of boldness.
Usha
The pink suede boots, absolutely iconic. Usha Vance stood out with her pink monochromatic wool ensemble on inauguration day, it was elegant but oh so pretty. Her outfits throughout the week leaned more demure, so I was pleasantly surprised (and totally obsessed) when she stepped out in a stunning strapless black velvet Oscar de la Renta gown. I can't wait to see more from her.
